Alessandro Algardi
Tuesday 9 June – Friday 19June

The art work of Alessandro Algardi is alive. It is easy to write about, as in his calligraphic works on canvas the elegance of his unreadable words is dominated by the hidden expression of his ideas. In his petrified writing you can find the echo and sediment coming from centuries of written cultures.

Extracts from Algardi’s illegible manuscript (2005) by Ubeir Peeter.

Curated by Rossana Pittelli

Bernini and Borromini: Baroque Rivals
Monday 15 June 15,  7pm

Bernini and Borromini were the most prolific and important architects Rome had ever had since the fall of the Empire. Together they edified the city and gave it the aesthetic imprint it bears today. From spiralling cupolas to voluptuous sculptures they left a legacy of staggering beauty. Initially collaborators, their opposite personalities, exacerbated by meddling popes and personal jealousies, eventually turned them into ferocious competitors.

One Hundred Nails
Tuesday 23 June 2009, 7pm

One Hundred Nails (Centochiodi) has been declared by Director Ermanno Olmi, remembered for his 1978 masterpiece The Tree of Wooden Clogs (L'albero degli zoccoli) to be his last fiction feature. In this film he tells the story of a young philosophy professor, who decides to completely abandon the intellectual life, and he does so with a powerful symbol of rebellion:
he in effect "crucifies" 100 irreplaceable volumes in the university library by driving nails like the ones used to hammer Jesus onto the cross!
